Helpful Suggestions for the Swim Meets

Swim meets are held on Saturday mornings, the weather may be cool, windy, or hot. In order to provide comfort and protection to your swimmer(s), you should come prepared for any type of weather. A swim meet is like camping for a day. The following is a small list of things to bring to help keep you and your swimmer comfortable. Parents please have your swimmer's get plenty of rest, avoid sleepovers the night before the meet.

BLANKETS OR SLEEPING BAGS - For the swimmer to keep warm while waiting for their next event.

SHADE/CANOPY/TENT-to keep you out of the cold breeze or hot sun.

TOWELS - Swimmers are in and out of the water and need dry towels. During the cooler days, towels are difficult to dry--recommend at least two towels per swimmer. Label towels with your swimmer's name in permanent marker.

SWEAT PANTS or SHIRT - Are comfortable and easy to get on and off. Team apparel is available for purchase. Label with your swimmer's name in permanent marker.

LOTIONS - Bring appropriate sun block to protect your swimmer. Have your swimmer apply A coat of sun screen prior to leaving the house. This will give it time to soak into the skin cells And work better. Sun screens have a tendency to come off with exposure to water and continual toweling; please apply often throughout the day. Most pools are not shaded.

SNACKS - Meets usually last four to five hours, but can go longer. Bring healthy snacks and drinks. Usually there are snack bars available at the meets, but don't count on it. Suggested snacks: low protein foods such as bagels, rice cakes, power bars, fresh fruits, vegetables, sandwiches (no peanut butter-too heavy, slow digesting, slows a swimmer down.) NO gum allowed in any pool area. No sugar foods (i.e. candy, soda, and cookies). Sugar is a source of energy that is quickly used up. Therefore causing a swimmer to be twice as tired when it is gone.

NOURISHMENT- Water intake should be optimized, replacement type sports drinks, are good. Carbonated drinks (sodas), fat, red meat, and milk products should be avoided during swim meets. Eat pasta meals, lean chicken, real fruit juices, fruits in high water content, up to several days before the meet.

EQUIPMENT - Bring goggles if your swimmer normally wears them and an extra swim cap. Kick boards or water toys are not allowed at the meets.

MISC. - Bring along something for the swimmer to do while they are out of the water. Playing cards, travel games, reading and/or writing materials. Folding or patio chairs are allowed at the meets. Radios/Walkmans are not allowed at any meet. They cause disruption and possibly the missing of events.
